What Is Black Friday, and Where Did It Come From?
Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year in the United States—it always takes place the day after Thanksgiving, and brands have flash sales to boost sales in the lead up to Christmas. Black Friday first took place in the '50s, and although it remained an America-centric event for decades, it was inevitable that it would hit British shores along with baby showers, proms and trick-or-treating.
Amazon was the first to introduce Black Friday to the UK in 2010, and according to KPMG, it wasn't until Britons spent £1 million every three minutes on Black Friday in 2014 that this became a hugely powerful shopping event. And the event, however much we grumble that it's too "American," isn't going to go anywhere.
What Not to Buy on Black Friday
Although many brands won't announce their Black Friday deals until a day or two before the sale, you're unlikely to find many luxury deals. If you were hoping to find a Gucci belt bag or something Vetements, designer brands in the UK tend to avoid the shopping event and wait to go on sale around Christmas. This isn't the day to buy designer handbags or cult fashion items, but it is better for items like cashmere jumpers and classic blazers from major high-street retailers like M&S, John Lewis and ASOS.
Another item to avoid is winter accessories, as online shopping expert Michelle Madhok told SheFinds: "They get marked down more as the season goes on."
What to Buy on Black Friday
Black Friday can be perfect for gifting, so if you want to be efficient with your Christmas shopping this year, it can pay to check if the gifts you had in mind are on offer.
Our number one tip is to make a list of the things you are looking for and are missing in your wardrobe the week before the discounts, and try not to veer too far off your list, to eliminate the risk of panic impulse purchases. (We've all been there.) Certain brands do always have a Black Friday promotion, including M&S, Topshop, ASOS, John Lewis, Amazon, Urban Outfitters and Mango, so add your favourite pieces to your basket, and then you can quickly check what has gone on sale. This will stop you from going down a Black Friday internet hole.
Another one of our favourite sale shopping tips is to think about the year ahead as a whole—even if you're not going on holiday until September 2018, there's no harm in purchasing a classic swimsuit now at a big discount, so don't just think about this season.
