H&M's New £20 Jumper Is Almost Identical to Princess Diana's and Kate's Versions

While browsing through H&M's new arrivals for a story—yes, it's is part of my job—I saw a sporty sweater that looked incredibly familiar. Then it hit me: none other than Kate Middleton has worn a similar version before. And upon further digging, I found a photo of the late Princess Diana in the very same trend, too. Is that kismet or what?

Varsity jumpers are certainly nothing new, but H&M has a knack for translating trends into extremely affordable pieces that are widely accessible. So when I come across a royalty-approved trend at a £20 price point, I knew I had to share. Scroll down to see how Kate and Diana styled the preppy sweater trend and shop it for yourself.

The late, great Princess Diana was photographed on a school run in 1992 wearing a varsity cable-knit sweater with jeans and ballet flats.

On Kate Middleton: Ralph Lauren jumper; Superga Cotu Trainers (£55)

In May 2021, the Duchess of Cambridge wore her varsity sweater with affordable Superga trainers and black trousers for some tennis drills with kids. How cute does she look? Watch out, Sporty Spice.

Erin Fitzpatrick
Senior News Editor

Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 12 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of senior news editor (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
