These Swimsuits Could Be Good Enough to Kill Bikinis Off Forever

Until last summer, I wouldn't have considered wearing anything but a bikini whilst sunning myself on the beach or posing poolside. It just didn't occur to me that swimsuits could look as cool, but, boy, was I wrong. In case you missed it, 2018 saw a shift in swimwear trends, with the likes of Hunza G and Solid & Striped putting one-pieces back on the map with their bright, directional designs. And now, with so many other brands getting in on the cossie action, it's clear swimsuits are going to be huge on the summer style scene this year, too.

With literally thousands of styles on offer, it's daunting to know where to begin your search. Which is why I've taken it upon myself to whittle down the best swimsuits online right now. We've broken it down into eight categories for your shopping ease. Consider the following your complete guide to the biggest swimsuit trends of the season. From waist-cinching belted numbers to the one-piece that was made with bigger busts in mind, keep scrolling to see and shop the very best swimsuits of 2019.

BELTED

Solid & Striped kick-started the belted swimsuit trend last summer, and now a plethora of brands have their own take on '50s-inspired swimmer. The shade of this Nicholas number is divine, but if you already have a swimsuit at home that you love, you can re-create the look for yourself with a contrasting elasticated waist belt.

FULL-COVERAGE

Whether you use your swimwear for active purposes or simply prefer a look with a little more coverage, this season there are lots of swimsuits that err on the modest side. From printed long sleeves to ballerina-esque wrap tops, these one-pieces are anything but frumpy.

ONE-SHOULDER

Fashion's obsession with the '80s was certainly felt on the spring/summer 2019 runway, and swimwear is no exception. Instead of high-cut bottoms, use minimal one-strap swimsuits to give your poolside attire a Dynasty vibe. Metallic mules and oversized sun hats optional, but highly recommended.

CUTOUT

Cutouts keep cropping up on one-pieces, but not in the way you'd normally expect. Instead of featuring slashes to the sides, the chicest styles all feature peekaboo detailing on the midriff. Go for a small keyhole for a subtle nod to the trend, or for maximum impact, look no further than this gorgeous polka-dot swimsuit from Peony.

HIGH-NECK

High-neck swimsuits are having a moment, and we're very much here for it. In fact, we think they might just be the sexiest style going as the simple, no-fuss cut actually gives you a more defined silhouette. Sporty styles are at the top of our wish list, particularly, in pastel tones.

PLUNGE

Plunge necklines work for those with and without a chest, as many styles have built-in support. Mara Hoffman plays to this season's penchant for leopard print with her tie-shoulder offering, while Heidi Klein serves up unrivalled support with its halter-neck one-piece.

BANDEAU

If a glowing complexion is your main goal, a bandeau swimsuit should be your only consideration as the absence of straps means you won't be left with tan lines across your shoulders and décolletage. Keep your poolside attire interesting by opting for rainbow stripes, a bright neon hue, or, as previously discussed, a belted finish.

HALTER-NECK

Conversely, if achieving a flawless tan isn't high on your list of priorities, why not try a halter-neck swimsuit? They never fail to look glamorous and will look the part paired with a linen midi skirt for afternoon margaritas by the sea. From & Other Stories's block-colour creation to Ganni's pinup polka dots, there's a halter out there for everyone regardless of their personal style.
