I can't imagine that "party" will be the first word that comes to mind when we look back on last year, but despite the constrictions of social distancing, many of us found ways to celebrate the things in life that are worth celebrating. So no, we didn't hit the town in towering heels, but we did find unexpected joy in pieces such as the humble embellished jumper. Looking ahead to 2021's party season, it's understandable that plenty of people will jump at the chance to dig out their spangled frocks, but if you're anything like us, the party knit will now be a wardrobe mainstay.
We have seen plenty of party knits hit the runways, from Loewe to JW Anderson, over the last few seasons. Joyful and chic with a side order of cosy, it has been a veritable celebration of sequinned necklines, embellished shoulders, bold buttons and statement sleeves. Gone are the days of not wanting to "ruin your look" by having to wear a coat over your LBD. Now, you can stay ultra cosy in your blinged-up knitwear yet still look ready for the party.
Perfect for both Zoom-based drinks and IRL meetups, the party knit can be dressed up or down according to your needs. My favourite party jumpers are the ones that come feather-trimmed. For example, just add Lanvin's blue knit to a pair of wide-leg black trousers and heeled boots for a supremely sophisticated look. For the magpies among us, there are also plenty of sequins, diamantés and blinged-up buttons to sate your appetite. I love the idea of wearing Christopher Kane's embellished grey jumper with jeans and combat boots and then transitioning it for the evening with a slip dress and heels.
