These Oversize Shirts Are the Ultimate Autumnal Staple

Long before we even knew the word 'covid', we were repeating the phrase "unprecedented times", and our wardrobes turned into a Groundhog day of comfy-but-smart pieces, fashion was already looking towards a more classic, pared-back approach. Our spring/summer 2020 report revealed that one of the most in-demand pieces for that season was a blue The Row shirt. Then the autumn/winter 2020 runways confirmed it: this season is about the pieces you'll be wearing forever and not just for a few months. In our trend report for this season, Elizabeth von der Goltz, global buying director at Net-a-Porter said that customers will be making more considered purchases with sustainability in min and that "our wardrobes will be more hardworking than ever before, featuring well-loved pieces that can be styled in multiple ways."

Nothing then could be more hardworking than the oversized shirt. I've probably banged on about this item a lot over the years and my personal favourite is one I've worn for over five years—a vintage men's Ralph Lauren shirt (which I'm even wearing in my byline picture). I've worn it with jeans, trousers, over dresses in summer, tucked into skirts, thrown over the top of leather trousers, tied at the waist, and worn over a black roll neck when it's especially cold in the winter. And those are just the outfit examples off the top of my head—I didn't have to think about how to make it versatile, it just is. So then, with this in mind, I've compiled a list of oversized shirts that you'll wear throughout the whole of this season, and for years to come. I should know, I've already done it.
