I'd Previously Sworn Off Miniskirts, But These Styles Have Changed My Mind

Our wardrobe preferences have changed dramatically over the past few years. Slippers replaced high heels, and joggers became a staple in the lives of many. But now, things are changing. We might only be a few weeks into spring, but we can already feel our sartorial appetites returning, with a real need to wear something that makes us feel empowered, and, dare we say, sexy. Cue miniskirts.

Midi hemlines have been all the rage in recent years, with miniskirts waiting patiently for their time in the spotlight to return. That time is now. People often associate miniskirts with the belly-baring, low-rise '90s staple worn by the likes of Britney Spears. But the divisive piece has come a long way and was easily one of the chicest and most prevalent items on the S/S 22 runway circuit. Even I, who had previously sworn off miniskirts, have come to see how polished they can be.

"Over the past few years, it has been all about the midi dress. However, there has been an increasing focus on the female form, with a return to body-con, cut-outs and rising hemlines," explains Who What Wear's UK style expert and editor Emma Spedding in our biannual trend report. "Designers such as Jacquemus, Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton all had several miniskirts in their collections, with '60s-style micro-skirts and mini slip dresses."

Influencers have also started to welcome the miniskirt back into their closets, wearing them with everything from shackets and knee-high boots to loafers and slogan tees. As for the skirts, while cult variations are doing the rounds (think Marcia's cut-out sides and Paco Rabanne's chain mail), if you're looking for something tamer to ease you back in, you might consider a pleated tennis mini or a classic tweed iteration.

This also comes in trending tones of pink and green.

Tweed textures have made a huge comeback for 2022.

The lace-up detail on this skirt gives it a cool aesthetic.

Of course, I’m tempted to invest in the matching top, too.

Tennis skirts are back and look their chicest worn with staple jersey basics.

Jacquemus is one of the brands that championed the mini early on.

Mini skirts with mini slits keep cropping up.

The jewel scallop hem is so pretty—I picture wearing this with an oversized white shirt tucked in.

Another & Other Stories miniskirt co-ord I rate.

A '70s-inspired take on the denim mini.

Gingham is always a good investment come spring.

Simple but no less effective.

This colour is rarely found on the high street.

The attention to detail that’s gone into this skirt makes it feel so special.

This will look fabulous paired with an oversized blazer in a clashing colour. Hot pink, perhaps?

Speaking of pink, this tweed mini is as sweet as can be.

It always pays to end on a high—and what a fashionable high this embellished mini skirt is. Just wow.
