These 6 New Layering Inventions Are Totally Random, But I'm Now Sold

People tend to have a love-hate relationship with winter layering. Either you revel in its cosy, textural appeal or you despair at the logistics of trying to fit a roll-neck and chunky jumper under your favourite jacket without looking like the Michelin Man. I definitely fall into the former camp, and I'm known for digging out my roll-necks and tights at the slightest sign of autumn, which inevitably leads to many sweaty tube journeys. Chic.

But now that the weather has officially turned, we have no excuse not to crack out our woollen staples. While there are certain pieces will always make up the bedrock of our layering arsenal, I've noticed that this season, there has been a slew of more unusual inventions to help us stay warm. Many of them are not what you'd typically associate with high fashion: I'm talking "nerdy" sweater vests, hiking-ready gilets and Winston Churchill–style waistcoats. In fact, they are all solidly within the stereotypically "uncool" camp (a recurring theme this year, it seems).

What's great about all of the below, however, is that they can easily be incorporated into your day-to-day outfits. Arket has plenty if woollen bibs and snoods in stock this season, and they can easily be popped under a jumper and offer the warmth of a roll-neck without the bulk. I also have a soft spot for sweater vests right now, and I can't wait to wear a loose-fit style over a white shirt and flared jeans.
