Summer 2020's Take on the Check Shirt Is a Fashion Favourite

While for some, the thought of a check shirt might conjure up images of a well-dressed dad at a barbeque or memories of a childhood school uniform, this season, the item has had a decidedly stylish makeover. And although the anecdotal evidence of this is clear—several influencers have embraced the button-down—there's also data to prove the theory.

According to fashion search engine Lyst, check shirts have seen a 38% increase in searches over the last few weeks, with styles by ASOS and Jacquemus among the most viewed. And although Jacquemus's S/S 20 yellow shirt was a guaranteed winner on the runway, seen on Instagram feeds worldwide after its debut in a lavender field in Provence, I feel a different check shirt could be credited for item's recent resurgence.

Earlier this year, La Veste, the brand co-founded by Blanca Miró, released a range of check shirts with Peter Pan collars and a squiggle-line trim. A multitude of influencers worldwide—including, of course, Miró herself as well as Camille Charrière, Nnenna Echem and Rachael Clifton—have since worn the style. In short, it's the shirt that launched a thousand Instagrams.

While the item is now sold out, evidently the popularity of the check shirt has stuck around for summer 2020. With this in mind, we've put together an edit of the best check shirts available. Keep scrolling to see how influencers are wearing the trend, and shop check shirts below.

Style Notes: A modern take on the check shirt. Here, Maria Alia Al-Sadek wears Jacquemus's iteration of the trend featuring an abstract loose check print.

Style Notes: Another example of La Veste's ever-popular shirt, this time worn by Nnenna Echem and accessorised with statement sunglasses.

Style Notes: Quite literally a borrowed-from-the-boys look, this Ralph Lauren button-down is from the men's section and a crucial element in my holiday wardrobe.
