10 Years Later, Every Fashion Editor Still Wants to Own This Iconic Jumper

You can forgive us for wanting to talk about knitwear incessantly right now. After a fairly lacklustre summer (save for that one week of really good weather), we're very much looking forward to all the great jumper, sweater and cardigan outfit options that are out there. Of course, there are some classics that we go back to over and over. A black roll-neck? Absolutely. A cardi you can belt? You better believe it. But one piece of knitwear that I know every fashion editor loves is the Bella Freud 1970 jumper. It's become something of a cult buy among the fashion and celebrity crowds.

The 1970 jumper was created in 2011 as part of Freud’s collection titled English Boy and has remained a best seller ever since. The brand has reissued it this season in an oversized fit, which, after two weeks, already had to be restocked, as it was sold out in most sizes. The 1970 motif has become a signature style of Freud's designs, but it seems that the jumper with the numbers emblazoned across the front is the most popular.

A simple style, the jumper comes in a variety of hues from a bright red to metallics, with a white box across the front with "1970" in (usually) black numbers over the top. Unsurprisingly, it was made famous by a couple of celebrities, notably Alexa Chung and Kate Moss, who wore the sweater not long after it was first created. More recently, the pink mohair version has become popular among the likes of Olivia Wilde and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

I think what really makes this item stand out is not just its timeless design but how versatile this piece can be. Whether you want to wear it with a pair of jeans and ankle boots, under a chic blazer or even over a skirt, the options for wearing this item are varied, making it a great wardrobe staple.
