The Paris Fashion Week Show Everyone's Talking About

At one of the most hotly anticipated fashion week debuts since Nicolas Ghesquière took up the reins at Louis Vuitton, it was no surprise that Instagram almost exploded when Demna Gvasalia (one of the main forces by buzzed-about brand Vêtements) showed his first collection as Balenciaga’s new artistic director. This is a storied couture house that was founded in 1919 by Cristóbal Balenciaga and, funny enough, hugely successful during the 15-year tenure of Ghesquière.

So what was the verdict? Gvasalia was respectful of the brand’s rich DNA, rooting through the archives to dig out the original designer’s recognisable curves and lavish florals. But he warped them, making them wild and unruly and injecting street-wise modernity into the proceedings. This collection was all about a couture attitude but not necessarily traditional couture clothes—and by that we mean the girl can wear the hell out anything 24/7, even an all-terrain jacket (zipped up, shrugged off both shoulders). She’s not waiting for a ball to wear chandelier earrings. She’s not dumbing down her workwear wardrobe. She’s not afraid of flipping something totally unexpected into a nonchalantly glamorous statement.

Gvasalia’s take on Balenciaga will no doubt shape next season, but his work at Vêtements is already doing it right now. Scroll down to see what you’ll want to wear tout suite…
