5 Work Outfits People Will Compliment You on Every Day This Autumn

There are so many things we love about autumn: the leaves changing to magical colours before falling and crunching under our feet, nights turning dark, the lack of excuses to stay home and devour a box set… but when it comes to getting dressed, we’re less enamoured.

Chilly mornings that give way to unexpectedly mild afternoons are cause for a headache when getting dressed for work. It’s too mild for winter coats and cashmere, and yet summery dresses just don’t provide enough coverage.

It’s that tricky, transitional time of year. But the good news is that you can still eke some wear out of your summer staples (in fact, we’re for wearing white jeans all year long). Make trouser suits, layers and all-in-ones your closest allies to keep the Monday-Friday crises at bay and following our suggestions for some easy, office-appropriate looks.

You Can't Go Wrong With a Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits were made for transitional weather. More serious than a dress but certainly not sombre, a button-down shirt style with elbow-length sleeves is an effortless outfit in one and so versatile that you’ll find yourself wearing it at least once a week. Dress it up with a bejewelled necklace or leave it minimal like Brittany Bathgate.

Utilitarian but chic, we love this.

Did you get the memo? Ballerinas are back.

A Midi Won't Let You Down

When will a midi skirt not deliver? Perennially chic with a casually unbuttoned shirt, we love Charlotte Khurt’s take on this classic combo.

A graphic stripe makes for a smart and arresting detail.

Don’t forget to add a bit of the unexpected.

Slingbacks aren’t going anywhere.

Don't Forget the Power of a Suit

A work suit no longer means a stiff, black two-piece with badly cut trousers. If you like volume, go for it, and enjoy the fact that your outfit comes with a perfectly co-ordinated suit. Men have been wearing suits for decades and it serves them well.

Pair with a white tee on dress-down Fridays.

Offset a suit with something abstract in the ear department.

A modern classic that most offices won’t grumble at the sight of.

Bring a Bit of Summer

That old saying of it’s not what you wear but how you wear rings true here: Take your white or beige jeans into autumn by shoulder-robing a wintry jacket over the top, à la Alexis Foreman.

Not invested in white yet? These are the way to go.

We have Arket’s shirts bookmarked on our browser.

We never met a French bag we didn’t like.

If You Can Do "Smart Casual," Wear a Cardi

This outfit is the holy grail of layering: a chunky wool cardigan makes a silk dress daytime-appropriate, and suede boots keep the look practical. The lesson to take away? Never save anything for best, especially come autumn.

You won’t reserve this bad boy just for work.

Guaranteed to work as hard as you do.

Top a tonal look off with these shiny boots.

Funny, are you finding yourself wishing it was Monday already?
