Now that we're in October, the winter collections are in full swing, with cosy knits and woolen coats slowly becoming part of our every day outfits. We find that Autumn it is the perfect time to step back and really think about what's worth buying before it gets really chilly and think about what slots into your existing cold-weather wardrobe. Keep scrolling to shop 11 editor-approved essentials for A/W 19.

1. Lace-Up Boots

Given these are already sold out in Zara in the first week of August, we can be certain that this will be the leading ankle boot trend in 2019.

2. Leather Separates

Leather is the fabric that designers are really experimenting with this autumn, with buttery leather shirts, skirts and trousers. Brands like Nanushka are also turning vegan leather into a luxe fabric.

3. Statement Trench Coat

JW Anderson's checked trench coat went viral within minutes of the London Fashion Week show back in February, so we can expect to see trenches have a fashion edge this autumn.

4. Frame Handbag

When it comes to handbag trends, the frame bag is a new name for 2019, and it's essentially a grown-up handbag with a top handle and a classic, rigid structure. "I find that when something is vintage, that piece has a much longer staying power since the style feels inherently classic, like the frame bag," says Lisa Aiken, fashion director at Moda Operandi.

5. Choker Necklace

A small wardrobe update for autumn 2019 is a choker necklace—preferably a chunky gold chain.

6. Pleated Skirt

Pleated skirts have long been a wardrobe classic; however, they're set to become even more popular this autumn. Brands like Burberry and Fendi styled them with a boxy blazer.

7. Dark Floral Dress

Instead of dainty florals, for autumn, our midis are going to have a moodier colour palette. Seen on the Prada, Richard Quinn, Marques Almeida and Paco Rabanne, the dark floral dress is set to be an integral part of our new-season wardrobes.

8. Heritage Blazer

Every year, checked blazers are an autumn essential. They look just as good with dark floral midis as with jeans and lace-up boots.

9. Brown Jumper

The chicest knitwear we've seen in the autumn collections so far is chunky ribbed wool jumpers in oatmeal and coffee colours.

10. Chunky Chelsea Boots

Chunky boots are the best way to toughen up a pretty dress or pleated midi skirt, and designers like Prada and Loewe are creating Chelsea boots with chunky rubber soles.

11. Suede Jacket

This is the one thing every single one of our editors wants to buy for autumn: a suede jacket adorned with '70s fringing.
