Athleisure is so prominent that Merriam-Webster added the term to its dictionary in 2016, and every high-street label we can think of has responded to the demand for the Hadid leggings-and-bomber uniform within their collections. But there are whispers that the go-to combo of black leggings, trainers and a crop top is "dying," and according to Vogue, something called "athluxury" is set to replace it for 2017. So what exactly does this new buzzword mean for our wardrobes?

When you google "athluxury," you'll see there is some disparity about what this term actually means, but Vogue describes the trend as the preppy sportswear you'd see at your local golf or country club. Think Ralph Lauren polo necks, rugby shirts, cable-knit cricket jumpers and pleated tennis skirts.
Vogue cites Tory Burch as the key influence when it comes to athluxury in its breakdown of the key trends for the year ahead, writing: "The designer's collection of elegant, country club–ready athletic apparel, Tory Sport, took athletic clothing and elevated it to a level worthy of the 'Burchgeoisie,' as a friend calls Tory and her clan of well-clad fans and followers." And just this week Tommy Hilfiger's S/S 17 collection had an athluxury feel, with rugby shirts as dresses and cropped polo shirts in Tommy colours.

As with athleisure, this trend is still about incorporating sportswear into your daily out-of-the-gym wardrobe, but is about opting for smarter, more uptown pieces rather than those you'd spot in your local gym. A key purchase here is a pair of tailored jogging trousers with an elegant stripe down the side, which Olivia Palermo (the antithesis of the athleisure trend) is a fan of.

As we transition into high summer, an easy way to tap into this trend is by swapping gym leggings for tennis whites. Elle Fanning is particularly a fan of pleated white shorts and skirts, and she has been wearing them as part of her summer wardrobe for years. Of course, in an ideal scenario, this would be paired with a pair of Gucci tennis pumps.
Elle Fanning often sports a tennis skirt outside of the courts.
