If our statistics are anything to go by, this winter has seen a surge in sales of puffer coats. We'll have to wait and see if there will be the same increased demand for jigsaws and Farrow and Ball paint as there was last year, however judging by the sales referred by Who What Wear over the past few weeks, everyone is on the hunt for the warmest coat they can find. With walks with one person outside of your household still permitted for most people, warm winter outfits have never been so vital.
I have been on my own hunt to find the perfect puffer coat over the past week, and after hours of trawling, I settled on the Arket's maxi down coat—a style that comes with a history of being extra-popular, even before the temperatures started to dip this January. Back in February 2020 the shopping search engine, Lyst, revealed that amongst the biggest-selling trophy pieces of the season (many of which were expensive and designer), Arket's perfect puffer made it onto the top 10. With its simple cut, elegant and neutral colourways, handy hood, slits with popper fastenings on each side to adjust for more movement and roomy pockets, it ticked all of the boxes for what one needs from a practical coat—and at £225 the cost per wear over a series of cold winters speaks for itself.
Since then countless editors and influencers (and just about everyone on the streets of London) have managed to get their hands on the cosy style before they whizz out of the (online) store yet again. Seeing as my social life is going to be al fresco for the foreseeable future, I want to be cocooned in as much padding as possible. What's more, I'm so impressed to discover that this trending Arket puffer is made from sustainable materials too. The coat is manufactured using recycled down and feathers, while the outside shell is made from matte recycled nylon and recycled-polyester yarn made from used plastic bottles. And did we mention it's very warm?
