Not All Boots and Trousers Go Together, But These Combinations Sure Do

I love denim, but every autumn, I find myself defaulting back to jeans and jumpers, which I quickly tire of. As such, I've made it my mission to try and explore other trouser options. While I won't be casting aside my skinny jeans just yet, there are three other trouser types I intend on wearing throughout the season. My only obstacle? Footwear.

I'm petite, and ankle boots always serve as my go-to, but I always find them notoriously tricky to style with trousers. Sometimes the hemline just doesn't work. At other times, the proportions don't add up. More often than not, I abandon them both and whip up an outfit from scratch. But no more.

I set out to find which ankle boot should be worn with which styles of trousers, and you know what? I've found eight foolproof combinations that just work. Keep scrolling to see, once and for all which ankle boots to wear with trousers.

WIDE-LEG TROUSERS

When it comes to footwear, wide-leg trousers are notoriously tricky to style, particularly, in winter. However, stick to fitted boots or those with an on-trend stacked platform sole, and they'll balance out the wide-leg silhouette.

These are the sleekest beige boots we've seen.

The sock-style insert makes these boots incredibly cosy.

A frugal way to tap into the trend.

Mock-crock finishes never fail to look expensive.

TAILORED

Tailored trousers that sit just below the ankle always look slick, so you don't want to detract from that with clumpy boots. Instead, opt for sleek stiletto heels with pointed toes to help elongate your pins. If you prefer flats, try a pared-back leather Chelsea boot.

You'll wear these boots forever.

SKINNY JEANS

We all rely heavily on jeans, with skinny-leg styles proving just as popular as ever. Their tapered leg means they'll offset chunkier footwear perfectly—think hiking shoes and cowboy boots.

You'll be grateful of these boots when the pavements become slippery.

Hiking boots, but make them premium.

Wear these with grey or ecru jeans.

CROPPED

Cropped trousers are incredibly versatile to style. Their shortened length means you can showcase statement ankle-boot styles—such as lace-up fronts and snake prints—to full effect.

These also come in tan suede.
