We all have our annoyances when it comes to style. Itchy sweaters, tags that poke you in the side, skirts that have perpetual static come to mind as a start. But as it turns out, one of Alicia Silverstone’s biggest gripes during her time playing the iconic teen character of Cher Horowitz in Clueless was the fashion itself. Yes, all of it.
In an interview with InStyle, Silverstone admitted she was not a fan of the film’s costume process. “I didn't understand why there were so many fittings. I was like, 'Why are these clothes so important?!' I was annoyed by [costume designer] Mona May, who I thought was mean because she was always yelling at me about the clothes,” recalls the actress, more than 10 years after the fact.
While we can understand where she’s coming from—the movie itself did see about 60 outfit changes for the actress, InStyle reports—Silverstone says she appreciates Horowitz’s legacy more now and recognizes how important fashion was to the story. “I just didn't pay attention to all that stuff,” she admits to the publication about her younger self. Honestly, it's a surprising, and kind of refreshing, revelation about a '90s classic… almost as surprising as referring to fashion as "stuff." Cue Miranda Priestly.
