Sorry, Jeans, Alexa Chung Just Wore the Easy Trouser Trend I'd Rather Try

Once upon a time, loungewear was what we allowed ourselves to indulge in only when we knew we wouldn't be coming into contact with any other humans that day. However, this year, our comfiest pieces are set to be seen everywhere but the sofa. Recently trialled by Alexa Chung, the model and presenter elevated her humble Adidas track pants with some clever styling tricks.

Wearing her burgundy bottoms with black kitten heels, Chung defied the boundaries of the casual pants by smartening up the silhouette. She finished her trousers with a cotton button-down and a long, black, tailored coat. Chung's outfit-elevating tactics juxtaposed the relaxed feel of track pants for a fashion-forward take on comfort dressing, and she's not the only one who is set to turn track pants on their head this year.

Although somewhat controversial—everyone I know has an opinion on this trouser trend, and it often leads to debate amongst fashion editors—track pants are set to be huge next season, having been spotted up and down the runways during the spring/summer shows. At Celine, models were styled in wide-leg track pants and leather jackets, tapping into one budding trend and another enduring one, for a seasonal look that balances the timeless with the trending.

Unlike previous years, 2024's best track pants come in a wide-leg cut. Styling well with an array of shoe styles, wide-leg track pants look equally as great with mary janes and loafers as they do with classic trainers.

This elevated take on athleisure offers brilliant flexibility in styling options. No longer bound to being part of a matching tracksuit, this season's track pants look chicest when styled with unexpected tops or jackets. For an Alexa-Chung-inspired take, wear your wide-leg track pants with a neat white T-shirt or button-down and dress them up with kitten heels, loafers or ballet flats.

Naturally, during the winter months, there is a time and a place for all-out comfort styling, and this is when wide-leg track pants truly come into their own. For a comfortable outfit you'll call upon time and again, style yours with an oversized hoodie and classic white trainers. Just make sure the fit is good to keep things chic rather than lazy-looking.
