Silver Shoes

We make no secret of the fact that we gravitate towards all things shiny (diamonds, sequins, foil, anything really). Lately, however, we've cultivated an infatuation with silver shoes, a trend that's now enjoying its proper turn in the spotlight. Though metallic footwear oozes a sleek, modern vibe, what we appreciate most is how it meshes so effortlessly with just about any outfit. After all, we can't imagine a single colour that doesn't go well with silver! Little wonder we recently spotted silver shoes cropping up on a handful of It girls like Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung, demonstrating exactly why the subject of today's Accessory Report is a must-have this season.

While the 3.1 Phillip Lim S/S 12 collection was a sea of enchanting sorbet pastels and cool monochromatic tones, what we coveted most was the designer's shiny Cody Half d'Orsay Sandals ($595, available in late February) in Silver. With a clear ankle strap and chunky heel, the shoes are a perfect day-to-night pick, offering a little flash at the workplace and a fashion-forward heel at happy hour! We wouldn't be surprised if these sandals inspired Hanneli Mustaparta and Caroline Sieber, who paired their silver kicks with fun, flirty outfits ideal for spring. At the Theyskens' Theory S/S 12 show in New York last fall, fresh-faced blogger/photographer Mustaparta donned 3.1 Phillip Lim's Sleeveless Printed Dress With Scarf ($750) in Navy and Mulberry's Carter Camera Bag ($1400), a colourful combo that screams playful and cute. But the addition of Alexander Wang's minimalistic Fabiana Sandals ($495) in Silver (sadly, these F/W 11 stunners are sold out) injects Mustaparta's getup with the right touch of ladylike elegance. Meanwhile at the Chanel Pre-Fall 12 show in Paris last December, Caroline Sieber paired the label's jacket and Clutch Bag ($2600) in Lambskin with Celine's Multicolour Fantasy Jaquard Bikini Top ($890, 305.866.1888) from Resort 12 and vintage skirt. The stylist finished off her sassy, skin-baring outfit with Celine's chunky platform shoes for a look that's equal parts sweet and edgy.

While Mustaparta and Sieber's attire exudes femininity, Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung opted for a slightly quirkier style. Though Palermo donned an all-black ensemble in New York at last October's celebration for the Macy's and Giambattista Valli designer collaboration, her careful attention to detail elevates what very well may have been a chic, yet inconspicuous, outfit. The model/television personality, a true sartorial star, adorns her Giambattista Valli for Macy's Strapless Velvet Burnout Tulip Skirt Dress ($40) and Emporio Armani F/W 11 blazer with shiny accents: a hint of sparkle from an embellished gold belt and a Mango sequined bag, a subtle glint from Miriam Haskell earrings and a vintage silver necklace. But we especially love how Palermo's party look gets a tomboyish twist from a pair of Sergio Rossi shoes! These lace-up oxfords with a mirror-finish serve as a fun departure from typical evening footwear. While in New York in early January, Chung also wore a mashup of dressy and casual pieces, like a Topshop hooded coat, Marc Jacobs Crewneck Draped Dress with Cabuchon Embroidery ($3600, 212.705.2000), and Marc Jacobs Metallic Mary Jane Pumps ($645) from the S/S 12 collection. In a versatile dusky silver shade, the glossy pointy-toe heels perfectly complement Chung's embellished dress.

Though you may regret that we're now out of celebrity examples, there is a silver lining! We gathered a top-notch selection of this accessory du jour for your perusal, including KARL's Metallic Leather Wedge Sandals ($405) and Nine West's Fastlife Heels ($99). Though the shoes are on opposite ends of the price spectrum, both convey Mustaparta and Sieber's fashion-forward vibe and serve as fitting footwear for a night on the town. If you fancy the shape of Chung's pointy-toe heel, consider B Brian Atwood's strappy Fineday High Heels ($375), which would look appropriate with tights (a la Chung) or bare legs. But if you seek on-trend shoes that offer comfort and style at the same time (a rare breed, indeed!), you'll find them in BCBGMAXAZRIA's luminous Blake Oxfords ($195). Much like Palermo's own version, these shoes feature a reflective sheen and a low heel, clearly proving all that glitters is not gold-quite often, it's silver!-Tiffany Tse
