With her very own magazine, CR Fashion Book, a cosmetics collection with beauty giant M.A.C., a new role as Global Fashion Director of all 26 international editions of Harper's Bazaar, and a fragrance in the works, it's official: Carine Roitfeld can do it all. The proof is in Fabien Constant’s must-see fashion documentary Mademoiselle C. The film, which opened yesterday for a limited release, offers a personal and charming look at the peerless former French Vogue Editor-in-Chief, while chronicling the beginnings of CR Fashion Book and its first issue. We got the exciting opportunity to speak with Roitfeld about the film and more.
What surprised you most about doing Mademoiselle C?
The film turned out to be really personal, which I didn’t expect.
What is your favourite editorial from CR Fashion Book’s Issue One?
The Kate Upton cover shoot and working with all the babies. It was so hard, but was amazing.
What do you love most about your job?
The freedom of being my own boss and getting to do the things I love and want.
What is the toughest part of your job?
The day never stops for me, so keeping organised.
What is the theme of the next issue of CR Fashion Book?
The next theme is about hope. I hope 20 times a day. The issue is dedicated to Caravaggio, who was a revolutionary painter in the 16th century. I always like people that change the world, change the way of seeing things, and I think he was one of them. And after, there were a lot like him, if you think about [Pier Paolo] Pasolini, Jim Morrison, and even Marilyn Monroe. They always try to be different or have another way of doing things, another sensibility.
Who would you love to collaborate with that you haven’t already?
We try to work with a lot of directors and there are a lot of people we like and would love to do something with. There are so many geniuses I would love to invite in my magazine. The great thing about [CR Fashion Book] is coursing between people that maybe did not photograph models at the beginning but they have the talent and can do everything. There are so many I would like to invite, it’s like asking me what is your dream list of people to invite to dinner. I have a long list.
What do you think are the key pieces every woman should have in her closet?
I would say a pair of black pants, a black lace slip dress, knee-length tight skirt, and a silk black shirt. It’s very Parisian, I would say. When you have these you can go everywhere.
Do you have any advice for people trying to get into the fashion industry?
I think it’s very difficult work today, because it’s become a very big business, but if you have the passion and you want to work, I think everything is possible. Some of my interns have become the best stylists and very young photographers have become very big photographers. If you really want it it’s possible, it’s just a question of finding the right people and meeting people at the right moment.
Can you tell us a little about what’s next for you?
I am working on a perfume line, the scents and the bottles. And if it’s possible, it will be my next thing for next year.
