I Don’t Wear Minidresses in Winter, But These Outfits Just Changed My Mind

For many of us, the minidress will be one of those fashion items that are firmly within the "summer" category of our wardrobes and are loyally packed away with the bikinis and linen separates every September. Recently, however, I've noticed some of Instagram's most stylish embracing thigh-skimming lengths in the darkest depths of winter. Fashion fantasy? Possibly. But it got me thinking about how I can introduce some hemline variety into my trouser-heavy cold-weather capsule.

My one caveat to these Instagram outfits is that they're mostly staged and not necessarily built for a long day out in 5° weather, so it's best to take them with a pinch of salt. However, whenever I've spotted a stylish minidress look, I've mentally added 50 denier tights and a long coat, adapting it to the realities of the British wintertime.

With this in mind, I've rounded up the four minidress outfits that have caught my eye this season. Of course, the knitted dress is an obvious option, which lends itself perfectly to this season's chunky boots (your winter minidresses BFF), but other options include vintage florals that look fab with knee-high boots and pie-crust collar dresses that can be toughened up with combat boots. A knitted roll-neck makes for the perfect pairing with vintage square-toe boots. Just add a mock-croc bag and gold hoops.

Grece makes a very good case for a rib-knit minidress and chunky boots, especially in fashion-editor black. If you're not brave enough to go bare-legged (same) just add tights and a wool coat.

This retro-print minidress lends itself to the colder months of the year thanks to its long sleeves and the fact that it looks so good with knee-high boots. If you're not such a fan of colour, this will also work just as well with brown or black boots and a more neutral A-line dress.

Printed dresses needn't be reserved for the summer months. This winter, we're taking our style cues from Marisa with a pie-crust collar star-printed dress and "don't mess with me" track-sole boots.
