These Vintage Oscars Dresses Are Still Iconic

Hannah Almassi

The Oscars red carpet is just around the corner, and we're using it as the perfect excuse to dive deep into the archives and resurface the most beautiful vintage Oscars style moments from the likes of Grace Kelly, Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts.

While it's easy to assume that Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe set the agenda for timeless glamour at this major Hollywood event, it is perhaps costume designer Edith Head who we really need thank for making the Academy Awards highly fashionable. The 35-time Oscar nominee and eight-time winner served as a fashion consultant during the '50s, '60s and '70s, policing what actresses wore to the ceremony, designing gowns and being on hand to deal with any wardrobe emergencies.

Nowadays, everyone has their own version of an Edith Head for the biggest night in their calendar, so things have been just as good ever since. Take a trip down memory lane and click through the gallery to see the most iconic Oscars looks of all time…

Feeling inspired to buy a dress? Us too, so we'll be heading on over to Net-a-Porter to check out the latest frocks.
