The Crop-Top Trend You Can Definitely Wear in Your 30s
The advent of July is a carte blanche for baring a tanned sliver of tummy in a crop top. Of course, it’s okay for the Hadids and Jenners of this world, but for the rest of us who haven’t been crunching our stomachs since the summer equinox, this is not welcome news.
Or is it? From my travels on Instagram, I’ve noticed one crop top that has been dominating the feeds of the fashionable—and it doesn’t look remotely like something you used to wear with a choker and velour track pants (thank heavens) but a partner to a wide range of grown-up options, from tailored trousers to midi skirts.
In comes the Ganni Charron Top (£140). It has adorably puffed sleeves—this summer’s move on from the ubiquitous off-the-shoulder, take note—and a tie at the sternum that is part Maid Marian, part Jeanne Damas. It’s all about wearing high-waisted skirts or trousers hoiked up so high you can only see the briefest flash of flesh.
Darja Barannik styled hers with a button-down skirt and backless mules for a lazy Saturday, while Lucy Williams wore the checked version with a pair of linen culottes that soared well above her midriff. Caroline Daur went for a mere modicum of skin with high-waisted white track pants.
The high street has plenty of purse-friendly options. Topshop’s bow blouse—currently a “trending product”—is splashed with roses. Berksha’s pink crop has little buttons and bell sleeves (very ’70s), while River Island’s dusty-pink top has frilly cuffs. You’re no doubt thinking about the bras in your dresser; namely, what on earth will work with that kind of V? The flat-chested should try a low-cut bralette like the ones from Love Stories Intimates, while those with ample boobs should make their way to M&S for Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s range of pretty lace plunge bras.
If the idea of flashing your barbecue belly is too much to stomach, then fashion features editor at Glamour Netherlands Stephanie Broek has the answer. She bested the crop top at its own game by wearing it over a black body tucked into ankle-flared jeans. Simple, effective—and she can eat as many hot dogs as she likes.
