Why Nicky Hilton’s 365 Style Method is a Life-Saver

Jessica Baker

You know when you come across something so extraordinarily genius and simple, you can’t help but wonder: “Why didn’t I think of that?” That’s how we feel about Nicky Hilton’s fashion method, a handy approach to shopping and finding personal style that Hilton introduces in her book, 365 Style, out now.

Here’s how the 365 method works:
3: Start by picking the three most common occasions you dress for. For example, work, night out, and the weekend.

6: Decide on your staple six pieces. These should be the silhouettes you wear most often, like a blazer, shift dress, button-down shirt, skinny jeans, tailored trousers, and a midi skirt.

5: Find your essential accessories. Again, these should be pieces you wear regularly, like a satchel, clutch, earrings, necklace, and ring.

When you’re shopping, think about how the item fits into your own personal 365 style. It should suit one of your occasions and match either your staple silhouette or one of your key accessories. Not only will it help you reduce a cluttered closet, but it also makes getting dressed in the morning a cinch!

We chatted with the influencer about her book, how she came up with the 365 method, and the best style tips she’s learned from family and friends, so keep reading for our exclusive interview.

Can you tell us how you came up with the 365 method for finding your personal style?
It all started because I, like many girls, wake up in the morning, look at a closet full of stuff, and feel like I have nothing to wear. I am numbers person, and found that there are pretty much six main silhouettes I wear each season and five main accessories. The 365 method has really helped me to have a more orderly closet filled with things I am actually going to wear.

How would you describe your own style?
I like to stick to the classics, but with my own twist. I would say sophisticated with an edge.

We’ve been covering your looks since the start of Who What Wear. How would you say your style has evolved over the years?
It definitely has matured, and right now I’m living in New York and it’s more reflective of the New York vibe. I’m kind of like a style chameleon; wherever I go, I dress the part. That’s one of the reasons I wrote the book. I love dressing up.

What are some style tips you’ve learned from your sister?
She has inspired me to have fun with colour and accessories. I tend to be a little monochromatic, and she is very sparkly and loves taking risks.

What’s the one article of clothing or accessory no woman should live without?
A black blazer.

What are you most excited about fashion-wise this fall?
I am obsessed with boots. I just bought the over-the-knee suede Stuart Weitzman boots.

Do you have any fashion moments you regret?
I wouldn’t say I regret it, but my sister and I used to love dressing alike. I’m sure there are a lot of photos you can find. I look back on that and find it funny.

What was the best part about writing your book?
The best part was spending time with my friends and family, and interviewing them and being able to relive all of these fun memories. Also, going through all of my storage and pulling out the photos to match to stories in the book. I’m a very nostalgic person and love looking at photos.

Do you have any shopping secrets for the girl on a budget?
I love vintage stores. I know a lot of girls who get intimidated by the big frumpy frocks, but that’s where the tailor comes into play. I’m known to take a big scary muumuu and turn it into a sexy minidress. I love to chop them and make belts out of extra fabric. I love reworking pieces, and it’s surprisingly inexpensive.

You designed a capsule collection for eLUXE. How do the pieces reflect your personal style?
I really wanted to squeeze all of my personalities into this small capsule collection. I am this native New Yorker who lives in California, who grew up uptown and is now living in the lower East Village, so I feel like I dress for all these different occasions. I really wanted to put all of that into this collection.
