This Instagram Account Is Fighting Fashion's Diversity Problem

Jessica Schiffer

Despite the fact that it’s been a hot-button topic for years now, the fashion industry’s efforts to diversify have been middling at best. Magazines, runways, and ad campaigns are still predominantly white, essentially leaving a huge portion of the world out of the fashion picture. As Dazed Digital first reported, an awesome new Instagram account, @moremodelsofcolor, is fed up with this reality and hopes to shine a light on the many diverse models working today:

“The idea that European features are the epitome of beauty needs to be abolished. … All girls, regardless of their ethnic background, have the right to see themselves portrayed in the fashion industry.”

We couldn’t agree more, and we love that the team is going above and beyond the well-known models of color, too, celebrating the likes of Amelia Rami, Pooja Mor, Amilna Estevão, and more. Of course, major change will require more than an Instagram account, but hopefully the industry at large will take it as another sign that embracing diversity for the long-term is the only way to go.
