Karl Lagerfeld Picked This Actress to Play Coco Chanel in His New Film

In honour of the French house’s upcoming Métiers d’Arts show in December, Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld worked on a short film that takes a “fictional, behind-the-scenes look at a yet-to-be-made biopic about founder Gabrielle Chanel.” It’s a witty choice, given how many biopics have been made about the founder in recent years, and Lagerfeld is well aware. “They make so many movies about Chanel. Why can’t I make one?” he joked to WWD.

His choice for the main role of “actress playing the part of Coco Chanel” is somewhat unexpected: Kristen Stewart. Though she’s a close friend of the brand—having appeared in its ad campaigns and regularly seen front-row at Chanel shows—it’s an unusual role for her, as she is best known for her dramatic chops in films like Twilight and Still Alice. From the sounds of it (Lagerfeld described the character as “complaining about everything”), this will be a much more comedic role for Stewart.
