Why the Bodysuit Is Your Key Wardrobe Staple

Emma Spedding

The Kardashian and Jenner families are responsible for a lot (and we mean a LOT) of trends we didn't see coming, but perhaps the most widespread of late is the return of the bodysuit.

In the '80s, if you wore a top, chances were it was a super-tight leotard with poppers at the crotch. And as part of the ongoing '80s comeback trickling down from the likes of Saint Laurent and J.W.Anderson, the body is starting to make a triumphant return to our roster of must-have basics. And now we're not sure why we ever forgot about it.

In contoured bodysuits (which look like they've been lifted from Kris Jenner's own archive) paired with flesh-coloured equally tight skirts, Kim Kardashian West and Kendall Jenner have spearheaded this lycra comeback, but this is a piece to consider even if you regard these A-listers as your total style opposite and you can't remember the last time you went into American Apparel.

The body provides a clean, sleek silhouette and is now a model-off-duty staple, and its tidy, streamlined aesthetic makes it the perfect foundation for autumnal layering.

We've also seen the trend extending to swimming costumes being worn with high-waisted skirts and shorts, but we're aware that no one can get away with wearing a Lisa Marie Fernandez one-piece as a top come October, so a more full-bodied bodysuit will be the perfect substitute.
