Shop 11 of the Best Wrap Dresses, AKA the Most Flattering Thing Ever

Hannah Almassi

The word "joyful" doesn't come close covering our level of enthusiasm about wrap dresses being back in fashion. The infamously flattering silhouette fell out of favour a while ago (thanks in part to a glut of poorly-produced ripoffs of the Diane von Furstenberg signature as well as brands rendering them in stuffy, office-appropriate colours and fabrics), but with new life injected into the dress world as a whole this season, the wrap has been welcomed—and updated—once more.

In design circuits, this comeback is mostly down to a selection of cult-followed labels. Think of the the likes of Attico (its slinky kimono-style wraps have been the talk of the town), Caroline Constas (her flounced cotton dresses are the last word in influencer holiday attire), Jacquemus (the thinking girl's shirting mecca) or Michelle Mason (where the A-list go for teeny-tiny, barely there evening pieces). Even DVF—which now runs under the creative direction of Jonathan Saunders—has updated its icon in myriad ways for 2017.

The way girls are wearing them also feels fresh. Many are choosing to use the wrap as a layering tool rather than a one-stop shop. With a camisole and jeans, the wrap dress overrides the need for a trophy jacket in springtime. Meanwhile, others are using them as beach cover-ups, and when worn solo, it's all about cherry-picking a style with extra design features—like ruffled or handkerchief hemlines. Those points of difference add extra power to what's essentially a very simple, very slimming, and now very versatile, buy.
